Home Video Releases

Since Drive never got a theatrical release in the US, the only way most folks here have been able to see the movie is on video. To date, the version of the film edited to 98m at the direction of producer Robbie Little is all that's legitimately available on this side of the pond, but a glimmer of hope sparkles from across the Atlantic...

If you have information about releases we don't know about, or more information about releases we do know about, please let us know! You'll be credited for your scoops on the site if you like. (I'd especially like a good-quality scan of the "Mark & Kadeem" UK DVD cover -- the best of the bunch, as far as I'm concerned!)

UK Special Edition DVD (May 2000)

UK specialty video label Medusa Pictures went to great lengths to put together this definitive release of the film, including not just a video transfer but a full restoration of Steve Wang's original cut including a Dolby Digital 5.1 remix of the original soundtrack. Unfortunately while Medusa had the foresight to release the DVD as a Region 0 disc -- theoretically allowing it to be played worldwide -- it is encoded in the PAL video standard, which prevents most home DVD players in the US from reading the disc. Computer DVD-ROM users will have better luck; others can only hope that some entrepeneurial company in the US decides to take advantage of the legwork already done by Medusa and release it here.

Malaysian Video CD (1998)

Nothing remarkable about this (pirate?) edition -- it's the full-frame US version. But if you don't have a DVD-ROM drive and want a copy of the movie to play on your computer's desktop, this is the place to look! Encoding quality is unremarkable but acceptable for the format. The running time is about five minutes shorter than the US DVD; this may be a transfer artifact but that's unconfirmed at this point.

Golden Satellite MR 0372 (VHS - unknown format)

US VHS/DVD (Sep. 4, 1998)

This movie-only release is, once again, the heavily-edited "Robbie Little" cut of the film. But we were mighty surprised to see it come out on DVD at the time, so even this was a bit of a blessing. The cover seems to be a reshoot specifically for this release -- dig Kadeem's wiggy "Eddie Murphy" look, which bears no resemblance whatsoever to his appearance in the film...
